The Rothberg Institute engages Baldwin's Future Scientists
On Thursday, November 13, The Rothberg Institute
visited Baldwin Middle School in Guilford, CT to discuss careers
in science & cancer research.
Research Associate Sara Takacs presented a multimedia presentation
to 80 fifth graders from section 5-2 that broadly discussed cancer,
Tuberous Sclerosis, and how scientists search for a cure. For
many students, this was their first exposure to the realities
of medicine outside the doctor's office. Sara fielded a range
questions from the students and teachers alike before turning
the focus to a hands on lesson.
Research Associate Rosa Rosado demonstrated basic lab equipment
and provided hands on lessons in pipetting for eight volunteers.
The visit excited the students, causing many to pause and consider
the work that goes into medical research and the challenges facing
both scientists and those suffering from grave illness.
Soon afterward, Ms. Takacs and Ms. Rosado received a package
of thank you letters from the students. The following are some
selected passages.

"I was so inspired by your presentation that I hope to be
a scientist when I grow up"

"When I grow up I want to be a science teacher so I can invite
you to my school as see if you have cured the disease"

"I think it's cool how you are finding medicine to kill sick
cells. That would help a lot of people around the world. That
makes you a Hero."
