Courage Fund The TS Alliance Rothberg
Award for Courage in Research recognizes and supports outstanding
scientific research directed at finding a cure for TSC. The TS
Alliance is a national voluntary health organization dedicated
to finding a cure for tuberous sclerosis complex and improving
the lives of those affected. The award is made possible through
a special research fund established by Jonathan Rothberg, Ph.D.,
Bonnie Gould Rothberg, M.D. and the Rothberg family.
For more information about the Rothberg Courage
Awards, the TS Alliance or Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), please

We have just initiated the single largest coordinated
effort to make drugs for TSC. This new multi-year project leverages
the power of the Harvard Medical School Faculty and Harvard's
Institute for Chemistry and Cell Biology to advance our understanding
of TSC and make drugs to treat it. This collaborative effort between
Harvard and the Rothberg Institute will focus on developments
that will lead to therapeutic intervention for the disease.
At the request of Marc Kirschner, Ph.D., Chair
of the Department of Cell Biology, senior faculty member, Lewis
Cantley, Ph.D., will lead the coordination and communication to
ensure a successful collaboration among the Harvard Faculty and
Scientists at the Rothberg Institute.
Other members of the team include the Laboratory
of John Blenis, Ph.D. Department of Cell Biology Harvard Medical
School, David Kwiatkowski, M.D., Ph.D. at the Brigham and Women's
Hospital., and Timothy Mitchison, Co-Director of the Institute
for Chemistry and Cell Biology (ICCB).
Harvard Medical School / TSC Research Collaboration
With funding provided by Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance Rothberg
Award for Courage in Research, faculty at Harvard Medical School
will leverage the power of working together with the Rothberg
Institute for Childhood Diseases to advance understanding of TSC.
This collaborative effort will focus on finding clues leading
to the development of therapeutic interventions for the disease.
Summary of Research Initiatives and Faculty for
TSC Projects Utilizing the Institute for Chemistry and Cell Biology
(ICCB) at Harvard Medical School.
The P13K signaling pathway is an important factor
in understanding TSC. Elucidating molecular interactions linked
with the P13K pathway is a unifying factor in the research projects
and in the laboratories of:
- John Blenis, Ph.D., Harvard
Medical School
- Lewis Cantley, Ph.D.,
Harvard Medical School
- Norbert Perrimon, Ph.D.,
Harvard Medical School
- Timothy Mitchison, Ph.D.,
Director of the Institute for Chemistry and Cell Biology (ICCB)
at Harvard Medical School
- David Kwiatkowski,
M.D., Ph.D. at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
